Southwood

This is Ramsgate in 1872 showing the area of Southwood including Southwood House and Steinschaenau House. The history of Southwood house has been well documented but Steinschaenau House is less well known.
The house was built by Christopher Haedy for his enjoyment and later retirement and his family lived in it until the last daughter died in 1897. He left no heir and his children all died without issue. The estate was sold in 1900 and the land became what is today Queen Bertha Road, Rawdon Road and Norman Road. The original wall of the estate is still standing as the boundary of Ramsgate Football club.. The house was so secluded no pictures of it remain. There is, maybe, a glimpse of the property in this painting by Pugin.
This depiction of Southwood area was said to have been painted in 1849 however it is less than accurate as St Augustines never had a steeple.
By 1895 the entire area had changed with the expansion of housing to the West of Grange Road.
Much of the land either side of Southwood Road had started to become built up and the building of the waterworks on land opposite the reservoir starts to become the view you have today.
By the time 1907 comes round Steinschaenau House has gone and the houses start going up in Rawdon and Clarence Roads, Norman Road starts getting built on and all the roads down to Grange Road start filling up.
You will note London Road has yet to be built but the plans are anticipated in the bottom of the segment.

  2. Hi Michael, My husband has lived in Ashburnham Rd, for about 22 years now. It's the big house which used to be part of the Jam Factory/French Laundry. He believes he read somewhere (Kelly's Directory), that our house was once called 'Southwood Lodge'. Unfortunately, I have not found any proof of its existence in any searches I've done on the internet. I have, however, managed to find an 'Ashburnham Lodge' in Southwood Road on a 1895 census.
Do you know if 'Southwood Lodge' did indeed exist and if it was, once upon a time, our house?
